Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s office said that 500 same-sex couples who were married in June will be recognized as legally married couples in Wisconsin, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Walker’s administration also said Monday that some same-sex couples could amend their previous tax returns.

According to Walker spokesman Laurel Patrick, when it comes to issuing marriage licenses the governor’s administration will treat same-sex couples the same as heterosexual couples.

The move by Walker’s administration comes after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected an appeal to reinstate the state’s ban on gay marriage.

Walker himself, as the Journal-Sentinel notes, is an opponent of same-sex marriage. About a week ago though Walker said that Wisconsin lost its fight over protecting the ban on same-sex marriage.
