The gay Republican group GOProud praised Sen. Rob Portman’s (R-OH) reversal on gay marriage after he announced that his son, Will, came out of the closet two years ago.
“Senator Portman’s announcement that he supports marriage equality for gay couples because he wants his gay son to have the same opportunity he and his wife have had for 26 years is an announcement that hits home for many Americans,” said executive director Jimmy LaSalvia. “Opinions on marriage equality for gay couples are rapidly changing in this country, driven in large part by the personal experience of having a family member or friend or co-worker who is gay or lesbian. Senator Portman’s political courage should be praised, but so should his love and compassion as a father. Thank you Senator Portman.”
