Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) on Friday became the first Republican to condemn Rep. Don Young (R-AK) for referring to migrant workers on his father’s ranch as “wetbacks.”

A border state Republican, Cornyn issued a statement saying that migrant workers are only looking for a “better life for their families” and that Young’s remarks only hurt the GOP. Young subsequently said he “meant no disrespect” with the comment.

Cornyn’s statement, as reported by Politico:

“Migrant workers come to America looking for opportunity and a way to provide a better life for their families. They do not come to this country to hear ethnic slurs and derogatory language from elected officials. The comments used by Rep. Young [(R-Alaska)] do nothing to elevate our party, political discourse or the millions who come here looking for economic opportunity.”
