A tea party Republican in the House took a swipe at President Barack Obama’s credibility on border security on Wednesday by invoking former President Bill Clinton’s womanizing past.
Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-KS) fired the zinger over his Twitter feed:
Most House Rs agree w/ most Senate Rs and Americans. Trusting Obama w/ border security is like trusting Bill Clinton w/ your daughter #tcot
— Cong. Tim Huelskamp (@CongHuelskamp) July 10, 2013
When he was asked by NBC News about the tweet, Huelskamp called it an “off-hand” remark but largely stood by the jab. As Politico noted, Huelskamp made a similar remark last month.
“The idea of letting this administration define border security is like letting Bill Clinton define sexual relations,” he said then.
Obama supports the immigration reform bill that passed in the Senate late last month, legislation that included an amendment that would drastically increase security at the border. In fact, even Republicans like Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN), who helped write the amendment, admitted that the border security provisions are “almost overkill.” Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said the bill will ensure that the United States has the “most militarized border since the fall of the Berlin Wall.”
