Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) announced Friday that he will not run in Georgia’s open U.S. Senate race next year.
“I’ve been remarkably encouraged and inspired by folks all across the district and the state to have us run for higher office, however, our assessment at this point is the House is the battleground for politics in this country right now,” Price told the Marietta Daily Journal. “The president has identified it as the place where he wants to wage that battle, and he believes that taking the House is what will allow him to have an unfettered run at this agenda, and we’ve got to stop that.”
The conservative congressman cited his position as vice chairman of the House Budget Committee as one reason for staying in his current role. Reps. Paul Broun (R-GA), Jack Kingston (R-GA) and Phil Gingrey (R-GA) have already announced their intention to pursue the seat being vacated by Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA).
