A Republican poll released Thursday found Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) currently in a solid early position in his re-election effort.

The survey by Wenzel Strategies found McConnell with a massive lead among Kentucky Republicans over Matt Bevin, a businessman and tea party activist who announced this week that he’s challenging the incumbent next year. Fifty-nine percent of GOP primary voters said they will support McConnell, while just 20 percent gave the nod to Bevin.

The poll also showed McConnell with a solid lead over the Democrat who’s running to unseat him, state Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes. According to Wenzel’s findings, 48 percent of all Kentucky voters said they’ll back McConnell while 40 percent said they intend to support Grimes.
