Google on Thursday debuted a new feature on its Google Plus social network: Google Plus Communities, or topic-focused groups of people and organizations. But the name of the new feature could have been something shapelier.
“The internal codename for Google+ Communities was ‘Squares’… We even considered naming the feature Squares… there are a lot of nice allusions to the Town Square, the public Square, the Piazza,” wrote Google’s VP of product Bradley Horowitz in a post on his Google Plus page on Friday.
Google has pushed Google Plus and its updates to users throughout the year, tacking it onto other popular Google products including YouTube and Google Play, Google’s official app, content and device store for Android. As of Thursday, the company reported 135 million users active on the Google Plus website itself.
