Google on Thursday launched a new Android app, “Field Trip,” that seeks to give users location-based information alerts automatically when they near specific sites, without the user requesting it, as the New York Times first reported. The app pulls information from a variety of sources (Google’s screenshots show everything from Atlas Obscura to Thrillist to Racked) and presents it as alerts and blurbs that appear on the smartphone screen when a user wanders near a specific location. Users can also control which sources they want to receive the information from and how often and may disable alerts as well.

Here’s a google ad for the new app, which is free for Android. Google said an iOS version was coming soon, which may offer the company the opportunity to get Google Maps back on Apple devices following Apple’s recent controversial decision to replace Google Maps with its own buggy Apple Maps service.
