At the NBC debate, Newt Gingrich took on Romney’s claim of being a citizen-politician: “Can we drop the pious baloney?”

Gingrich noted Romney’s previous run for Senate in 1994, and that he retired as Governor of Massachusetts — when he would have likely lost re-election — and was immediately running for president, only to lose to the Republican nomination to John McCain in 2008.

“You’ve been running consistently for years and years and years,” said Gingrich. “So this idea that suddenly, citizenship showed up in your mind — just level with the American people, you’ve been running since the 1990s.”
