Newt Gingrich has been campaigning feverishly to highlight his differences from rival Mitt Romney; the latest effort may come in the release of the former House Speaker’s tax returns. In an interview with Byron York of the Washington Examiner, Gingrich said he has instructed his staff to begin preparing his tax records:

“We pulled them out and we’re having our guys go through them, because we want to make sure we put them in order.”

It should be noted that Gingrich offered the important qualifier that the preparations were being made to release his records in the event that he secures the Republican nomination, but that they will “potentially” be released earlier. In the wide-ranging interview, he also challenged Romney’s record at Bain, suggesting that the prohibitive GOP front-runner will eventually have to conduct a press conference to clear the air over his time with the private equity firm.
