Republican former Sen. George Allen announced Tuesday that his comeback bid in this year’s Virginia Senate race brought in $1.4 million in the first quarter of 2012, and had $2.66 million on hand.

This does put Allen’s fundraising behind Democratic former Gov. Tim Kaine, who announced earlier Tuesday that he had raised $2.2 million for the quarter and has $4.4 million cash on hand.

The two are competing for the open seat of retiring Democratic Sen. Jim Webb, who very narrowly defeated Allen in 2006.
