Gene Sperling, a top economics adviser to President Obama, on Sunday rejected a Republican proposal to soften the blow of sequestration by giving federal agency heads the flexibility to allocate the sequester’s cuts at their discretion.

“When you have those type of harsh spending cuts in such a short concentrated period of time, it’s like saying to somebody you can cut off three of your fingers, but you can have the flexibility to choose which ones you want to cut off,” Sperling said during an interview on ABC’s “This Week.”

President Obama has also dismissed the proposal as insufficient to stem the economic pain sequestration is expected to cause.
