Opponents to gay nuptials in California asked the state’s Supreme Court on Friday to issue an order to county clerks to not give marriage licenses to same-sex couples, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The group ProtectMarriage argued that California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) lacked the authority necessary to end enforcement of Proposition 8, the 2008 state law that outlawed same-sex marriage.

The anti-marriage equality group sponsored Prop 8.
