A new national poll from Fox News shows President Obama with a 7-point lead, 46 percent to 39 percent, an improved position for the president after another poll from Fox three weeks ago showed he and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney tied at 46 percent. Pollsters pointed to independent voters as the reason for the Obama lead.
“Overall, each candidate’s party support is strong: Most Democrats back Obama (88 percent) and most Republicans support Romney (84 percent),” Dana Blanton, director of public opinion research at Fox wrote. “Among independents, 34 percent back Romney, 29 percent support Obama and more than a third are undecided or say they won’t vote (36 percent). Last month, independents broke for Romney by 46 percent to 33 percent.”
The current TPM Poll Average of the national race shows Obama with a tiny .7 percent lead overall at the moment.
