The Motion Picture Association of America, the film and TV industry’s main lobbying organization, on Friday announced that its CEO Chris Dodd, the former Connecticut Democratic Senator, had hired a new chief operating officer: Diane Strahan will take on the role of MPAA COO, leaving behind her previous job as the senior vice president and general manager of mobile and Internet registry services at Neustar, a realtime analytics and data company that manages the U.S. phone number portability system for when customers switch carriers and want to keep the same number. As Strahan said in a statement:

“I am deeply honored Senator Dodd chose me for this post and I am excited to work with him and so many talented colleagues at the MPAA and its member companies.  Throughout my career, I’ve contributed to global enterprises as well as start-ups in the converging world of digital technology, content and communications.  The MPAA is at the center of this convergence and I look forward to helping advance the common interests of the film and tech industries so consumers can benefit from a richer and more seamless entertainment experience.”

Neustar, which was founded in 1996 as a spin-off of Lockheed Martin, has in recent years come under scrutiny in the press for expanding into other markets, including the digital rights management system Ultraviolet, as well as accumulating data about U.S. citizens’ communications and acting as the go-between for U.S. law enforcement requests for suspect information from cell phone carriers. Neustar has denied it is up to anything sinister.
