Before Douglas Bruce served as a Colorado lawmaker, he fathered the state’s influential Taxpayer Bill of Rights. Now, the Denver Post is reporting Bruce is facing six years in prison and $500,000 in fines after a jury on Wednesday found him guilty of tax evasion.

Bruce declined to comment after the verdict was read, but earlier today said “this was the dirtiest trial (he had) seen in 38 years, regardless of the outcome.”

Ed Note: This post has been corrected from an earlier version. Douglas Bruce sponsored the state’s Taxpayer Bill of Rights before he was a lawmaker.
