Former Acting Director of ATF Ken Melson has resigned from a position he took at the Justice Department last year following the release of an Inspector General report on ATF’s Fast and Furious operation. Additionally, Deputy Assistant Attorney General Jason Weinstein — who served as a career federal prosecutor for several years before being appointed to a politically appointed position — resigned from DOJ but disputted the accusations against him in the IG report.
Weinstein wrote in his resignation letter that it was “virtually inevitable that someone must be singled out for blame, whether the facts support it or not” when investigations become politicized. “I am simply not willing to have my reputation sullied in the manner, and I am determined to separate fact from falsehood,” Weinstein wrote. His lawyer also submitted a long document objecting to a number of conclusions of the report.
