A Florida teenager sent police on a short wild goose chase for a shooter Tuesday after he accidentally shot himself in the thigh and lied about it, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said it took about 15 minutes to locate the boy, 15, after calls reporting the shooting gave different addresses. The shooting occurred around 3:20 p.m. in the parking lot of a J-Mart in the same plaza as the charter school the boy attends.

Deputies then searched for a shooter until they realized the middle school student was lying, according to the Sentinel.

The boy was taken to a children’s hospital in Orlando for treatment. Orange County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Jane Watrel told the Sentinel the boy may face a weapons-possession charge once discharged.
