The first-ever video footage of a 10-foot-long specimen of the giant squid in its natural habitat, more than 2,000 feet below the surface of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Japan, has been captured by a team of researchers working with Japanese broadcaster NHK and the U.S. Discovery Channel, and is due to air in its entirety on Japanese TV on Monday, January 14. But ABC News obtained a few frames early, which it posted on YouTube on Tuesday. See the ABC News video below:

The new footage is due to air in the U.S. on an episode of the Discovery Channel’s “Curiosity” series on January 27 at 8 p.m. Eastern.
