Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) on Thursday will introduce a bill to ban assault weapons, USA Today reported.

Feinstein’s legislation would grandfather in weapons that are owned legally when the ban takes effect, while exempting more than 900 firearms used for hunting. The author of the 1994 assault weapons ban, Feinstein has been in the vanguard of gun control efforts throughout her career.

Following President Barack Obama’s announcement last week of a package of gun control proposals favored by the White House, Feinstein issued a press release to reiterate her desire for a bill to “prohibit the sale, transfer, manufacture and importation of assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition feeding devices that carry more than 10 rounds.”  But she acknowledged the political challeneges in passing her bill, particularly in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

“It is an uphill battle all the way,” Feinstein told USA Today. “That doesn’t mean the battle shouldn’t be waged.”
