At a press conference Monday evening, Steve Richardson, a special agent with the FBI in Alabama, told reporters that the hostage situation in Midland City, Ala. was over.
Richardson said that FBI agents recovered the child at 3:12 p.m. Monday, after negotiations with the kidnapper, Jimmy Lee Dykes, deteriorated and Dykes was observed holding a gun. FBI agents then “entered the bunker and rescued the child.”
Richardson said Dykes was dead, and the child, who “appears unharmed,” was being treated at a local hospital.
