Facebook and CNN on Monday unveiled a new web tool called “Election Insights” that displays the relative percentage of U.S. Facebook users posting about the U.S. Presidential and V.P. candidates, showing positive or negative percentage increases in chatter. The tool also offers users the ability to filter results by state, age, gender and period of time (extending back 3 days).

CNN said it plans to reference the tool in its cable broadcasts as well.

The tool is just the latest manifestation of CNN’s ongoing digital politics partnership with Facebook (the two companies recently paired to release an “I’m Voting” app). It also comes on the heels of Twitter’s release of a comparable tool, the Twitter Political Index, which assigns an overall “sentiment score,” positive or negative, to all the tweets about the candidates.
