A former congressman said the man who allegedly murdered a young Democratic strategist earlier this week in North Carolina had a questionable record doing campaign finance work.

Former Rep. Brad Miller (D-NC) told the Raleigh News & Observer that Jonathan Broyhill, the man who police said stabbed 29-year-old Jamie Hahn in her Raleigh, N.C. home on Monday, submitted questionable finance reports during the Democrat’s 2010 campaign. Broyhill was an employee at Sky Blue Strategies, the Democratic firm founded by Hahn that Miller hired to help with his fundraising efforts that year.

“Some of the things that Jon said about the campaign finances were inconsistent with other information,” said Miller, who did not seek re-election last year. “It’s probably the case that Jamie was asking questions on behalf of the campaign about campaign finances. I think it’s bound to be part of the investigation of Jon’s motive.”

Miller said his campaign treasurer was contacted last year by the Federal Elections Commission, asking about reports indicating that donors to his campaign had received excessive refunds. The ex-congressman doesn’t know of law enforcement inquiry into his campaign finances, but said he plans to look into bank records and FEC reports.

Police responded to a 911 call Monday in North Raleigh, ultimately finding Hahn, who had run from her home, suffering from stabbing wounds. She died early Wednesday. Police then followed a trail of blood that led back to Hahn’s home, where they found Broyhill. Hahn’s husband, Nation Hahn, was reportedly upstairs in their home at the time of the stabbing. Friends of the couple said he ran downstairs after hearing his wife scream and suffered non-fatal wounds while trying to stop the attack, the News & Observer reported.

Broyhill, the best man at the Hahns’ wedding in 2009, remains at WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh where he is receiving treatment for self-inflicted stabbing wounds. Police said they will charge Broyhill with murder, replacing the original charge of attempted murder. Broyhill is also being charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

On Wednesday morning, Nation Hahn mourned the loss of his wife on his Twitter feed, drawing an outpouring of grief from others.
