Democratic city councilman Eric Garcetti claimed victory in the Los Angeles mayoral race.
Garcetti defeated Democratic city controller Wendy Greuel 54 percent to 46 percent, the Los Angeles Times reported.
In a message early Wednesday on his Twitter account, Garcetti expressed gratitude for his win. Garcetti will become the first Jewish mayor of Los Angeles. He will succeed current Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on June 1.
Thank you Los Angeles–the hard work begins but I am honored to lead this city for the next four years. Let’s make this a great city again.
