House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) said House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) would be a great majority leader and that McCarthy has his “full support” for the position.

“I don’t know who it is that will actually be running,” Cantor said at a press conference Wednesday afternoon. “I can tell you that if my dear friend Kevin McCarthy does decide to run I think he’d make an outstanding majority leader and I will be backing him with my full support.”

Cantor’s comments came a day after he lost in the Republican primary for his home Congressional district. Cantor announced at the press conference on Wednesday that effective July 31 he would step down as majority leader. The election for his replacement were set for June 19.
