The Rocket Man’s been had.

Two Russian TV presenters posted audio Wednesday of a phone call they had with world-renowned musician Elton John, who believed he was talking to Russian President Vladimir Putin and his spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

In a Monday Instagram post, John said he’d spoken with Putin by phone and was scheduled to meet with the Russian president in person to discuss LGBT rights. Putin has backed strict, anti-gay legislation over the past few years.

But the Kremlin later denied that Putin ever spoke with John. Vladimir Krasnov and Alexei Stolyarov, known to viewers as “Vova and Lexus,” took credit for prank calling the LGBT rights advocate.

On the audio recording, John sounded excited about the prospect of meeting with Putin face-to-face.

“If both our offices can find a convenient date where we can convene and have a really wonderful discussion, that would be a miracle and it would be fantastic,” John said. “It would be a dream come true.”
