Libyan officials have begun tallying votes from the country’s first free election since Muammar Qaddafi first came to power in 1969. While results are not yet official, it appears that the coalition under the National Forces Alliance, led by interim Prime Minister Mahmud Jibril, will take the largest share of legislative seats. Said Jibril: “There was no loser and winner at all. Whoever is going to win, Libya is the real winner of those elections.”

Sixty-three percent of the country’s 2.9 million eligible voters cast ballots in Saturday’s election, and authorities are hoping to release final results later this week. The United Nation’s top official in the country said the election went better than anyone could “reasonably have expected.”
