Two days after President Mohamed Morsi reinstated the Egyptian parliament — and one day after the Supreme Court subsequently reaffirmed its original decision that the legislative body must disband — lawmakers gathered on Tuesday for the first time since the court’s original ruling. The court’s decision is backed up by the Egyptian military, which ran the country after the fall of Hosni Mubarak last year.

The meeting came amidst a protest gathered outside the administrative court in support of Morsi’s decision. Morsi’s party, which owns the lion’s share of the seats in Parliament, has called for a million-man protest to show solidarity with the president. Monique El-Faizy, one of the project leaders at the World Policy Institute, said, “I think it’s the delicate balancing act that we’re going to see for a while. This is all new. Everybody’s finding their way.”
