Egypt has arrested six individuals tied to an attack in Sinai earlier this week, a rash of fighting that led to the deaths of 16 border guards near a police station. The six were picked up in a joint army and police sweep, coming after troops had begun massing troops in the peninsula. State television reported that state forces had also killed 20 militants on Wednesday in Egypt’s largest military endeavor in nearly 40 years.

Israel reportedly allowed Egypt to utilize helicopters near the nations’ border, a sign of easing tensions remaining from the 1979 peace accord. The Egyptian military relayed that militants’ attack on the police station was aided through mortar fire from Gaza.
