The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) said Wednesday that it’s still “actively recruiting” candiates in South Dakota, nearly three months after a former aide to Tom Daschle launched his campaign.
Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO), the DSCC chairman, said that he expects the party to compete in South Dakota, even though former Republican Gov. Mike Rounds looks like an overwhelming favorite at this point.
Democrats were dealt a pair of setbacks when both former Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-SD) and U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson, the son of outgoing Sen. Tim Johnson (D-SD), opted not to run. The only Democrat to enter the race thus far is Rick Weiland, who was encouraged to run by Daschle.
