Donald Trump on Wednesday hinted that he may run as a third-party candidate if he continues to be treated poorly by the Republican National Committee.
“The RNC has not been supportive. They were always supportive when I was a contributor. I was their fair-haired boy,” he told The Hill in an interview published Thursday morning. “The RNC has been, I think, very foolish.”
Trump said he would continue to monitor the race and how the Republican party acts toward him.
“I’ll have to see how I’m being treated by the Republicans,” he said about a third-party run. “Absolutely, if they’re not fair, that would be a factor.”
“I’m not in the gang. I’m not in the group where the group does whatever it’s supposed to do,” he continued. “I want to do what’s right for the country — not what’s good for special interest groups that contribute, not what’s good for the lobbyists and the donors.”
Following Trump’s remarks calling Mexican immigrants “rapists” and drug dealers, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus called the real estate mogul, reportedly asking him to tone down his rhetoric. And after Trump said that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) is only considered a war hero because he was captured, the RNC quickly condemned Trump’s statements.
