Donald Trump, never one to shy away from his moment in the spotlight, is publicly challenging Mitt Romney to stay by his side even as the mogul makes birtherism his number one cause.

“[President Obama] is practically begging [Romney] to disavow the place of birth movement, he is afraid of it and for good reason,” Trump tweeted on Tuesday. “He keeps using [John McCain] as an example, however, [McCain] lost the election. Don’t let it happen again.”

Romney recently affirmed his support for Trump, who is attending a fundraiser with him later today, while distancing himself from conspiracies surrounding Obama’s birth certificate. But Trump hasn’t made it easy, going on a lengthy unhinged rant about Obama’s origins on CNBC earlier Tuesday.
