Donald Trump Jr. said Tuesday that his father’s most recent comments on immigration do not represent a “softening,” and he insisted that the Republican nominee still wants to deport all undocumented immigrants from the United States.

“He wasn’t softening on anything. He didn’t change his stance on anything,” Donald Trump Jr. said during an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper that aired in part Tuesday afternoon.

Cooper then alluded to Trump’s town hall with Fox News’ Sean Hannity last week, during which Trump polled the audience on deportation instead of directly answering questions about his policy proposals. Cooper pointed out that by surveying the audience, viewers may have thought Trump was unsure of his own policy.

“He was asking for an opinion. His policy has been the same for the last, you know, six, seven, eight months,” Donald Trump Jr. said in response.

Cooper then sought to clarify that Trump “still says, ‘Deport, they all gotta go.'”

“That’s been the same, correct,” Donald Trump Jr. responded. “But again, you have to start with baby steps. You have to let ICE do their job, you have to eliminate sanctuary cities, you have to get rid of the criminals certainly first and foremost. You have to secure the border. These are common sense things.”

Donald Trump Jr.’s comment about “baby steps” seemed to echo his father’s comments to CNN following the town hall with Hannity. Trump told CNN last week that he would first deport the “bad” undocumented immigrants. “After that, we’re going to see what happens.”
