Asked on Morning Joe if he believed Islam was an inherently violent religion, Donald Trump refused to answer the question directly, but said, “There’s something nasty coming out of there.”

MSNBC political analyst John Heilemann asked Trump, who called onto Morning Joe Monday via telephone, whether Islam was “an inherently peaceful religion … that’s been perverted by some” or a “an inherently violent religion.”

Trump said he didn’t “know that that question can be answered.”

“It could be answered two ways. It could be answered both ways. But there’s something going on there,” Trump said. “There’s a lot of hatred coming out of at least a big part of it. You see the hatred. We see it every day. You see it, whether it’s in Paris, or whether it’s the World Trade Center …”

In the wake of Paris terrorist attacks, Trump has floated creating a database for Muslim Americans.

“There’s something nasty coming out of there,” Trump said Monday.
