Donald Trump called for the Clinton Foundation to be “shut down immediately” in a statement released Monday morning, characterizing the organization as “the most corrupt enterprise in political history.”
“Hillary Clinton is the defender of the corrupt and rigged status quo. The Clintons have spent decades as insiders lining their own pockets and taking care of donors instead of the American people,” Trump said in the statement. “It is now clear that the Clinton Foundation is the most corrupt enterprise in political history.”
Clinton has long faced questions about her involvement with the foundation during her tenure as secretary of state, with Trump recently accusing Clinton of fostering a “pay-to-play” relationship with foreign donors and the State Department.
On Thursday, Bill Clinton said the foundation would no longer accept foreign or corporate donations and that he would step down from the board if his wife is elected.
No matter the outcome in November, the foundation will shutter the Clinton Global Initiative, which will hold its final meeting of global philanthropists, donors, and leaders this fall, he also confirmed.
