Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes told CBS that the U.S. is ready to provide “political support” to the Syrian people. He said “further militarizing the situation” doesn’t make sense, nor are there talks at the moment of arming the Syrian opposition. Instead, he mentioned international groups and leaders coming together to put increased pressure on Syrian President Assad.

“Assad is running out of options,” Rhodes said. “He’s lost control of his country. He has to go.” The U.S. will work with every country that will join to pressure Assad to step down, Rhodes added.
