The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee released a statement just after state Sen. Jodi Ernst (R) won her party’s nomination for U.S. Senate in Iowa on Tuesday night calling her the “Sarah Palin of Iowa.”

“Her rigid partisanship and support for the federal government shutdown not only won her the support of Sarah Palin, but proved that Joni Ernst is the Sarah Palin of Iowa who would bring more gridlock and dysfunction to Washington,” Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Deputy Executive Director Matt Canter said in an email statement.

“Her hyper-partisan agenda is bought and paid for by outside special interests who support her efforts to privatize Social Security, end Medicare as we know it, deny reproductive choices even in cases of rape and incest, and eliminate the federal minimum wage,” the statement continued.

Ernst had more than 54 percent of the vote at 10:53 p.m., when the Associated Press called the race for her. She gained national notoriety for an ad in which she said, “I grew up castrating hogs on an Iowa farm so when I get to Washington, I’ll know how to cut pork.”

She was also endorsed by former 2012 Republican candidate for president Mitt Romney.
