Two Republicans are likely to advance to the general election in California’s 31st Congressional District, leaving behind a promising Democratic candidate that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee had hoped would turn the seat from red to blue. In California’s jungle primary system, the top two candidates advance to the general election regardless of party affiliation.

Though the AP has yet to call the race, Republican incumbent Rep. Gary Miller leads with 27 percent of the vote, followed by his Republican challenger, state Sen. Bob Dutton, with 25 percent. The Democrat, Redlands Mayor Pete Aguilar, has 23 percent of the vote. There’s only a 1,000-vote spread between each of the top three candidates. On the Democratic side, Aguilar had two opponents who split the vote, keeping him in third place.
