Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) said in a statement Monday that she has been diagnosed with lung cancer, which she described as “treatable.”

The longtime congresswoman said in the statement that she expects the treatment to sideline her from “activities in Washington,” but said her staff will serve her constituents while she recovers.

“I am a fighter, as many people know, and I am committed to beating this latest challenge in my life,” McCarthy said in the statement. “I’m grateful for the support and love of my family, friends, colleagues, and staff.  I look forward to a successful treatment and returning to continue the mission that I’ve started as a Member of Congress.”
