Democratic Senate candidate Heidi Heitkamp has come out with her first TV ad in the North Dakota Senate race, a standard biographical spot to introduce her to voters.

“I grew up in a big family in a small town. Some people don’t think it’s much — but to us, it’s home,” says Heitkamp. “Mom was a school janitor; dad never finished high school; he used to work out on these roads. And they believed in us — all seven kids went to college. I worked my way through on a road construction crew. I’m Heidi Heitkamp, and I approve this message, because Washington can learn from places like North Dakota — and they’ll get to hear that from me.”

Heitkamp was the state attorney general in the 1990’s, and then ran unsuccessfully in the 2000 gubernatorial race. In this year’s Senate race, to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Kent Conrad, the presumptive Republican nominee is freshman Rep. Rick Berg, who won the state’s sole House seat by defeating an incumbent in the 2010 Republican wave.
