Lefty blogger Markos Moulitsas Zuniga has a modest proposal for Democrats this month: vote Republican.

No, the Daily Kos isn’t merging with Red State. The idea is that if Democrats crash the upcoming GOP presidential primary contests and cast a vote for Rick Santorum, they can prolong the race and weaken Mitt Romney or whoever ends up as the nominee in the process. Since GOP turnout has been exceptionally weak so far, Markos argues that even a small number of electoral saboteurs can impact the race.

The longer this GOP primary drags on, the better the numbers for Team Blue,” he writes. “Not only is President Barack Obama rising in comparison to the clowns in the GOP field, but GOP intensity is down — which would have repercussions all the way down the ballot.”

The plan’s nickname, Operation Hilarity, is a play on Rush Limbaugh’s 2008 plan “Operation Chaos,” in which he instructed listeners to vote for Hillary Clinton over Barack Obama in order to keep the Democratic primary elecotrate divided. It’s unclear whether it had any impact, but Limbaugh was happy to take credit for any subsequent Hillary victories either way.
