The third Virginia gubernatorial debate took a turn for the whimsical on Thursday night when Republican candidate Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli likened Democrat Terry McAuliffe’s plans for focusing on education and research to bringing a puppy home but not having a plan on how to keep it.

“You know saying the words education and research, that’s all great but those are goals, those are platitudes,” Cuccinelli said. “They’re not plans. I like those too. I like education —I like puppies! But I don’t bring a puppy home if I don’t have a plan to deal with that puppy.”

Cuccinelli went on to say McAuliffe is “all puppy and no plans.”

Cuccinelli’s comments were in response to McAuliffe saying that he would like his signature issue to be “creating jobs and diversifying the economy.” Cuccinelli’s point was that McAuliffe had not released a sufficiently detailed plan on job creation.
