Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli (R) donated thousands of dollars to crisis pregnancy centers, institutions that try to convince pregnant women not to have abortions and that critics say provide misleading information about women’s health.

According to a Mother Jones of tax forms Cuccinelli’s campaign released, between 2008 and 2012 Cuccinelli donated about $4,038 to crisis pregnancy centers and an organization associated with them. Cuccinelli donated more than $1,300 to the AAA Women for Choice crisis pregnancy center in the Manassas region of Virginia. The organization was able to raise an additional $3,860 for their clinic by raffling a Gadsden flag autographed by Cuccinelli.

Cuccinelli’s donations will likely be used as ammunition by his Democratic opponent in the Virginia gubernatorial race, Terry McAuliffe who has sought to label Cuccinelli as a right-wing extremist who is particularly conservative on women’s health issues. That strategy seems to be working as recent polling has shown McAuliffe with an increasingly wide lead in the race.
