These days, it may be easy to forget that Dr. Ben Carson earned a reputation as a renowned neurosurgeon prior to his ascension as a right-wing celebrity. But before he was unleashing scathing critiques of the Affordable Care Act and comparing gay people to pedophiles, Carson rose from humble beginnings to carve out a decorated career in medicine that included a 2008 Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Fortunately, a 2009 made-for-television biopic serves as a primer for the apolitical part of Carson’s career. With Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr. in the role of Carson, “Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story” tells the “true story about a renowned brain surgeon who overcame obstacles to change the course of medicine forever,” according to the movie’s IMDb page. The movie originally aired on TNT.

After students at Johns Hopkins University started a petition to replace him as the medical school’s commencement speaker, Carson on Friday apologized for anti-gay remarks he made during a recent appearance on Fox News.
