International legal statutes hold that a nation must be under imminent threat in order to justify engaging in military action. The immanence of the supposed threat from Iran is under dispute, with some observers arguing that an attack to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons would support the maintenance of international law. Critics argue that the legal definition of immanence is very hard to meet in Iran’s case, beginning with the fact that it has not been conclusively established that Iran is even seeking to build nuclear bomb.
