Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy (D) delivered the news to the families of the slain victims at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., that their loved ones had been killed, he said during an interview that aired on ABC’s “This Week” Sunday.

The families had been gathered for hours, Malloy said, and he was ultimately the one to deliver the news.

“Friday, it — it was clear to me that — that there was a reluctance to — to speak to the families,” Malloy said, describing the situation. “But it was also clear to me that we knew everything we needed to know at that point, and so it fell upon my shoulders to inform the family of what had transpired and that their loved one wouldn’t be joining them again.  And it was — it was a tough, tough time.”
