A Louisiana school district has put an end to a high school band’s attempt to raise money by raffling off 52 guns, television station KATC reported on Wednesday.
Comeaux High School in Lafayette, La. had approved the fundraiser itself, Lafayette Parish School Board member Mark Cockerham told the station. However, he said, the school district did not support the concept.
Cockerham said this type of gun raffle has been held at schools in neighboring parishes with lots of success, KATC reported.
Parents of Comeaux High School students said the band would have given away a gun every week in 2015 for a total of 52 winners, according to the station.
Cockerham told KATC the raffle winners would have undergone background checks at a gun dealership.
“It’s not like they would have just given somebody a gun,” Cockerham said, according to KATC.
Superintendent Pat Cooper told the station he had concerns about the raffle.
“It wouldn’t have mattered if it (the gun raffle) had raised only one complaint,” Cooper said, according to the station, “I still wouldn’t think it would’ve been a good idea.”
