Stephen Colbert defended the Pentagon’s practice of giving surplus military equipment to school districts on Wednesday night’s episode of “The Colbert Report.”

Colbert played a news clip revealing that the San Diego School District received an armored vehicle.

“Hey, the San Diego School District needs that MRAP to defend itself in case Los Angeles school districts get grenade launchers — which they did,” Colbert said.

He was quick to point out that “as the San Diego School District’s police chief explained, it’s not as scary as it looks.”

The show played a clip of the police chief talking about the armored vehicle.

“There will be medical supplies in the vehicle,” the chief said. “There will be teddy bears in the vehicle.”

Colbert applauded this effort of making the tank appear less intimidating.

“What a valuable life lesson, kids. When you see an urban military strike vehicle, run toward it for the free teddy bears,” he said.
