CNN’s Anderson Cooper came out as a gay man in a letter posted on Andrew Sullivan’s blog, The Daily Dish, on Monday.

“The fact is, I’m gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud,” Cooper wrote.

Cooper never denied his sexual orientation in the past, but wrote that he had tried not to publicly highlight that aspect of his life given his work in dangerous regions of the world where homosexuality is still taboo — and even dangerous. But in the end, he said he had become concerned about the level of public speculation regarding his private life.

“It’s become clear to me that by remaining silent on certain aspects of my personal life for so long, I have given some the mistaken impression that I am trying to hide something – something that makes me uncomfortable, ashamed or even afraid,” he said. “This is distressing because it is simply not true.”
