The Club For Growth, the right-wing economic group known for going after incumbent Republicans and establishment favorites in the primaries, has endorsed former Nebraska Attorney General Don Stenberg in the Republican primary for Senate.

“Don Stenberg is a lifelong champion of economic freedom and will be an ally for fiscal conservatives in Washington,” said Club president Chris Chocola, a former Congressman from Indiana, in a press release. “Don will fight to repeal ObamaCare and cut spending, and he’ll oppose the bailout culture in Washington that is bankrupting America. Nebraska Republicans looking to send a pro-growth voice to the Senate should rally behind Don Stenberg. The Club for Growth PAC enthusiastically endorses his candidacy.”

Stenberg previously ran for Senate back in 2000, losing 51%-49% to Democrat Ben Nelson, who is now retiring. The other contenders in the GOP primary this year are the state Attorney General Jon Bruning and state Sen. Deb Fischer.

On the Democratic side, former Sen. Bob Kerrey, who retired in 2000, made a last-minute jump into the race a week ago, and is running in a primary with state University Board of Regents Chuck Hassebrook.
